John Koeter joined Synopsys in 1998 and is currently Vice President of Marketing for the Solutions Group. In that capacity, he is responsible for the marketing of Synopsys' DesignWare® IP, Professional Services and System-Level Design products. Before coming to Synopsys, Mr. Koeter held marketing, engineering, and corporate application engineering positions with Texas Instruments and Advanced Micro Devices. Mr. Koeter holds a BSEE degree from Cornell University.

Hal is the President of CAST, Inc. Hal earned a BSEE and worked several years as a circuit designer, before moving on to technical sales and marketing positions with GenRad, Intergraph, and HHB Systems (later acquired by Racal-Redac). Witnessing both stunning successes and colossal managerial failures, he has applied those lessons to leading semiconductor intellectual property provider CAST, Inc. the past several years. Pioneering a successful virtual and distributed organization model and using a lean, customer-oriented operations philosophy, Hal has helped CAST succeed and thrive in a volatile and challenging market.

Joe Abler is a Senior Technical Staff Member in the IBM Systems and Technology Group at Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Joe is a member of IBM’s Common Platform Strategy team, driving a technology collaboration of IBM, Chartered Semiconductor, and Samsung Electronics. Joe’s responsibility is to develop and strengthen alliances with industry IP and EDA providers to build a comprehensive ecosystem enabling the Common Platform’s base technologies and delivering client solutions. He joined the IBM Microelectronics Division in 1999, bringing to the team over 20 years of experience in networking, storage, and consumer related technologies.

Next in our interview series, Brian Gardner offers insights on the IP market.


Brian runs the IP Group at Denali, which provides DDR and PCIe IP solutions. Brian has been in the chip business for over 25 years, and has run chip businesses at Motorola (now Freescale) and Qlogic; as well as working as VP of Marketing and Business Development at two chip startups. He has a BSEE from LSU.

One on One: Bill Martin

Next in our interview series, Bill Martin offers insights on the IP market.


Bill has nearly 30 years of experience in consulting, product design and project management in standard IC product, ASIC and EDA companies. Bill joined Mentor in 2000 and has held senior roles in Mentor Consulting and IP. In addition to Mentor, Bill previously worked for Synopsys, VLSI Technology and Mostek. Martin holds an MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana. He has been granted multiple design/test related patents.

Warren Savage, President and CEO of IPextreme, is a well-known and published authority in the field of semiconductor intellectual property. He has a long history of pushing the envelope of design methodology from his work in fault tolerant computing at Tandem Computers in the 1980's and driving reliable design metholologies into commercial practice at Synopsys for its DesignWare IP product in the 1990s. Much of his thinking became embodied in the seminal book on IP reuse, the Reuse Methodology Manual. Warren is taking his vision to the next level with his latest company, IPextreme, which is focused on enabling broad commercialization of IP captive in large semiconductor companies.
