The heart of this frequency synthesizer is a low Phase Noise (PN) VCO with wide tuning range. This VCO has both discrete coarse tuning and continuous fine tuning for minimum noise sensitivity and the smallest silicon area for the integrated loop filter. The output of the VCO is buffered with an inductive load amplifier to drive the long interconnects. A programmable frequency divider controlled by a 3rd order 3-bit Sigma Delta Modulator (SDM) generates one of the inputs of the Phase Frequency Detector (PFD). PFD compares the programmable divider with the reference clock and controls the Charge Pump (CP). CP output currents are then filtered by the integrated 3rd-order Low Pass Filter (LPF) which generates the VCO?s control voltage.
Spur-free SDM and low noise design provides an excellent EVM while having a very low power consumption. VCO?s bias circuitry is integrated to minimize the supply dependency.
