Discover the new VSF TR-07: Transport of JPEG XS video in MPEG-2TS over IP

The main focus of the new Technical Recommendation TR-07 from Video Services Forum (VSF) is JPEG XS. The new codec is really specialized in high-quality and very low-latency and focuses on high-quality live video contribution and transmission.

With TR-07, the JPEG XS Interoperability Activity Group has focused on JPEG XS over MPEG-2 TS using SMPTE ST 2022-2 to ensure interoperability. VSF TR-07 follows what has been done for JPEG 2000 VSF TR01, where we are using ST 2022-2 as the IP encapsulation mechanism in MPEG-2 TS. Within the MPEG-2 TS encapsulation, we have the JPEG XS codestream for the video along with the audio and the ancillary data. TR-07 is specifically targeted for the Wide Area Network (WAN).

More and more applications, such as camera control, need super-low latency. At the same time, live production has become more popular. Humans can get used to some latency but the lower latency is, the easier it is to deal with it.

With JPEG XS, comparing to the previous JPEG 2000, we are talking about 1- to 3-millisecond latency versus 100-milliseconds with JPEG 2000. This really gives the feeling to the technical staff and operators that there is no latency at all and that they can do everything like they were there! These are the benefits of JPEG XS: very minimal latency, very high-quality for supporting remote production. JPEG XS is the new ISO/IEC standard 21122, designed for latency-critical real-time applications and offering near-lossless and visually lossless quality with low power and low complexity.

In a nutshell, the VSF TR-07 work includes

Wide Area Network (WAN) SMPTE 2022-2 Encapsulation
JPEG XS 444.12 High Profile focusing on 4:2:2 interoperability points primarily
Range of Coding efficiency approximately 1.5 to 4bit per pixel (bpp)
Interoperable capability sets with groups of interoperability points
HD, 4K & 8K television format/frame rate capability sets including HDR and WCG
  Audio and ancillary data support

VSF TR-07 splits the video formats into capability sets meaning that a vendor can comply with the specification by stating which subset(s) it can cope with. Running JPEG XS over MPEG2 Transport Stream defines capabilities for 2K, 4K and 8K video with and without HDR. The JPEG XS compression is not about audio, it is for the video. Therefore we can use a portion of the MPEG-2 TS  to multiplex JPEG XS Elementary Stream (ES) and AES audio into a single MPEG-2 TS in a standardized way. The VSF TR-07 MPEG-2 TS specification covers all sorts of things besides compression.

VSF members are intended to create industry-wide compatibility between senders and receivers using JPEG XS for high-quality video delivery. It is a standard way to promote interoperability for live workflows, dematerialized facilities or cloud-based operations. intoPIX proposes essential transport solutions either in the LAN, over the WAN or into the Cloud.

“JPEG XS is the new SDI” supported by both ST2110-22 (VSF TR-08) and ST2022-2 (VSF TR-07) and effectively bridging both LAN and WAN-based workflows. VSF has also released the new TR-08, which can be used for LAN but also for WAN and cloud applications, supporting the transport of JPEG XS Video in ST 2110-22.
