Discover the new VSF TR-08 : JPEG XS coding using SMPTE 2110-22 Encapsulation

The primary objective of this new Technical Recommendation TR-08 is to address local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN) and cloud applications and enable interoperability between products from different vendors. It supports the transport of low latency JPEG XS Video in ST 2110-22.

The JPEG XS Compression method is used in low-latency transmission applications for cost-effective, high-quality, real-time transport of television video signals over IP networks. With JPEG XS, comparing to JPEG 2000, we are talking about 1- to 3-millisecond latency versus 100 milliseconds with JPEG 2000 and far more with H264 or HEVC. This really gives you the feeling that there is no latency at all and that you can do everything like you were there! These are the benefit of JPEG XS, it can offer a full end-to-end standardized solution with negligible latency - and no loss of quality - at a fraction of the bandwidth. Which creates the best-in-class experience for the broadcaster and the viewer.

The low latency nature of JPEG XS encoding and decoding lends itself particularly well to live production applications. The ability to compress video to a tenth of its size without compromising quality means that broadcasters can save on bandwidth costs, particularly when many live feeds need to be sent to a central location for production. In any environment where production is being performed over IP networks in a distributed way, JPEG XS allows technical directors, operators, and production staff of all kinds to be located anywhere without worrying about delays. At 10:1 compression, video quality is visually lossless, and latency is negligible.

With this new TR-08, the VSF JPEG XS Activity Group has focused on JPEG XS with SMPTE ST 2110-22 encapsulation and the potential system interoperability issues with other media components within the ST 2110 system.

Case study of live production migration in the cloud through TR-08.

Using JPEG XS over SMPTE ST 2110-22 along with FEC, ARQ or SMPTE ST 2022-7 enables to directly bring the live feeds from the venues, the cameras, the studios directly into the cloud for live production and reversely, and with zero latency. VSF has initiated a Ground to Cloud to Cloud to Ground (GCCG) activity group that addresses these needs. Premium quality workflows use TR-08 to achieve it.

Capability Sets and Interoperability Points for Broadcast and ProAv applications

TR-08 has developed interoperable capability sets which include interoperability points for specific target applications. These Capability Sets define the features and capacities which can appear in a bitstream and the capability expected in a compliant receiver.

The Capability sets take into account the constraints of the network and timing whether it is for a LAN (Intra-Facility) or WAN (InterFacility) application or for ProAV (Intra-Campus with Multimedia), including timing constraints from the IPMX standards. These sets support HD, 4K and even 8K video conformance level, targeting broadcast applications with 4:2:2 color sampling up to 10 bits for example or ProAV applications with 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0 color sampling up to 10 bits or even 12 bits.

JPEG XS is essential as well for the ProAV and for Broadcast, it will save a lot of time and challenges, avoiding developing specific things for a separate market... it is going in the right direction!

intoPIX has developed a complete set of solutions for implementers

Notably, the new IPX-RTP-XS IP-cores for JPEG XS video over ST 2110-22. They enable the RTP packetization/depacketization and are designed to be used with intoPIX video codecs. The FPGA IP-cores can directly be connected with the TICO-XS encoder & decoder IP-cores, providing full compliance with JPEG XS video transport over RTP.  The cores follow the IETF JPEG XS RFC and are suitable for interoperable transport of JPEG XS video over SMPTE ST 2110-22.

On top of that, intoPIX also provides a low-latency implementation of JPEG XS in software suitable for VSF TR-08.

VSF has also released the TR-07, with this new release, the JPEG XS Interoperability Activity Group has focused on JPEG XS over MPEG-2 TS  / SMPTE ST 2022-2 to ensure interoperability
