TSMC in spat with Intel

Last weekend TSMC chairman Mark Liu (pictured) took Intel to task over its efforts to persuade the US government only to support domestic US chip companies.

’Not too many people will believe what Intel says,” said Liu, “it will be very negative for the US to subsidise only American companies. Unlike Intel, TSMC is very positive about non-US chipmskers expanding capacity in America. It is a great thing. This shows our decision two years ago is correct.”

Two years ago TSMC decided to build fabs in Arizona.

Recently Morris Chang, founding CEO of TSMC, warned that it was unfeasible for any one country to try and build a domestic semiconductor supply chain.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is struggling to catch up with TSMC in process technology and is looking for every cent of government money he can get. Last week he said that China’s acquisitive tendencies towards Taiwan made it ‘unstable’.

Intel is one of TSMC’s biggest customers for 3nm wafers,

  1. Taiwan, China, and Korea all heavily subsidize the microelectronics industry in their countries. Teh Semiconductor Industry Association estimates 30-40%. Funny, i don’t recall any of those nations investing in non-domestic industry.
