TSMC Eyes China

According to DigiTimes TSMC is evaluating the possibility of putting an advanced fab in China.TSMC has always held to the strategy of keeping its fabs in Taiwan with two exceptions – a j.v. 8″ inch fab with Altera in Washington State and an 8″ fab in China.

So, if TSMC builds a leading edge fab in China it would be a radical departure.

However two Taiwanese chip companies, UMC and Powerchip, companies are are planning 12″ fabs in China.

UMC has already begun building its fab in Xiamen and Powerchip is planning to set up in Hefei.

If TSMC goes for it the likely site is Sonjiang alongside its 8″ fab.

The main concern for TSMC in putting advanced fab in China is protection of its technology IP.

  1. That’s an excellent point, DontAgree, but we haven’t yet seen any examples of China putting any knowledge it might have gained about TSMC’s process technology into effective use.

  2. So TSMC is currently assuming that their computer system have not been infested with spyware from the Chinese and/or the American and/or Russian government … funny …

If the Chinese can copy/steal the blue prints of the JSF (a.k.a. F-35), then what chances does any other business have?
