MercuryNews.com and the Good Morning Silicon Valley blog featured on SiliconValley.com are finalists in the 15th annual EPpy Awards contest, which honors the best in digital media from around the globe.

MercuryNews.com is a finalist in the category Best Newspaper-Affiliated Web Site with over 1 million unique monthly visitors, while Good Morning Silicon Valley is a finalist in the Best Business Blog category.

The EPpy Awards contest draws entries from large and small newspaper, television and other media-affiliated sites that compete in 36 categories ranging from design to content. Mercury News affiliated sites have won seven EPpy awards since the contest started.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for excellence at both MercuryNews.com as well as our business blog on SiliconValley.com,” said Dave Butler, editor of the Mercury News and vice president for news for MediaNews Group, the company’s parent. “With the implementation of a new content management system later this year, the user experience should show dramatic improvements in all aspects of our web sites.”

The San Jose Mercury News was the first newspaper to put its complete news content online. What was then called Mercury Center was named Best Overall Online Newspaper Service in the large-circulation newspaper category and won two other awards in 1996, the first year Editor & Publisher magazine held the contest.

In the years since, the Mercury News has won other EPpy awards, including Best Use of Video in a Media-Affiliated Web Site with over 1 million unique monthly visitors in 2009 and Best Internet Business Service for SiliconValley.com in 2003 and 2004.

Other finalists this year in the Best Newspaper-Affiliated Web Site category are the Denver Post’s DenverPost.com, The Toronto Globe and Mail’s Globeandmail.com, the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Knoxnews.com, Newsday Interactive’s Newsday.com and the New York Daily News’ NYDailyNews.com. AOL’s BloggingStocks, the Financial Times’ FT Alphaville and The Conversation of HBR.org from Harvard Business Publishing are the other finalists in the Best Business Blog category.

MercuryNews.com and SiliconValley.com are part of a network of Bay Area web sites overseen by the Bay Area News Group’s vice president of interactive Chris Howard. Director of online content Randall Keith is responsible for news content and senior producer Dan Wong is responsible for programming on MercuryNews.com and SiliconValley.com.

The EPpy Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the 21st annual Editor & Publisher Interactive Media Conference & Trade Show June 16-17 in Las Vegas.
