“From Sept. 15 onward, our flagship Kirin processors cannot be produced,” Richard Yu (pictured) CEO of Huawei’s consumer unit said at the recent Mate 40 launch, “our AI-powered chips also cannot be processed. This is a huge loss for us.”
The US has barred any fab which uses US manufacturing equipment from making chips for Huawei’s chip subsidiary HiSilicon.
The US has also barred HiSilicon from getting updates to US EDA products.
“Huawei began exploring the chip sector over 10 years ago, starting from hugely lagging behind, to slightly lagging behind, to catching up, and then to a leader,” said Yu, “we invested massive resources for R&D, and went through a difficult process.”
However without up-to-date EDA from Cadence, Synopsys and Mentor, and without access to the only two leading edge logic foundries – TSMC and Samsung – HiSilicon cannot make a state of the art SoC.
Opportunistically, Qualcomm is lobbying the US government to be allowed to sell its 5G chipsets to Huawei, reports Reuters.
Qualcomm has just resolved a licensing issue with Huawei which involves Huawei paying Qualcomm $1.8 billion in the current quarter.
I worked for Huawei for 19 years. This company is an arm of Chinese secret service. At first I didn’t believe it myself, then realized that it’s true. Joe is not right. Before Cisco it was Lucent from whom Huawei stole 5SS switch architecture, than Canadian Nortel and only then – Cisco. And a lot more theft, including the robot Tappy from T-Mobile. Many times Huawei employees were caught taking pictures at a competitor booth after exhibition work hours, to mention just a few…
Generally speaking, for Chinese all foreigners are “red-haired devils”, not deserving honesty and business ethics.
If somebody wants that Chinese secret service may do what they want in the their national telecom network, go ahead, and buy Huawei.

Huawei is the tip of the spear for the CCP. Huawei was built on Cisco stolen switch technology. And if you aren’t already aware, China has over a 1,000,000 Uighurs in “reducation camps”(read concentration camps), uses forced labor to build products, still harvests organs from executed prisonsers(criminal, religious, politcal) and is making aggressive claims on terrority not belonging to it. This is wonderful news.
