WWComs Announces High Profile HD H.264/AVC Encoder at the National Association of Broadcasters Show
Update: Cavium Networks buys W&W Communications (Nov. 2008)
WWComs real-time demonstration of resolutions up to 1080i/p (1920 x 1080) will be exhibited at the Las Vegas Convention Center, booth number SU5205
Las Vegas Nevada (April 24th, 2006) Meeting the demands of the broadcast marketplace for video compression technology, W&W Communications, Inc. (WWComs) today unveils a prototype of its H.264 High Profile encoder, the VIP-264-HP, that performs real-time encoding up to 1080i/p (1920x1080). The VIP-264-HP is based on DSP technology from Texas Instruments and FPGA technology from Altera and achieves bit rate reductions of more than 60% over standards such MPEG 2 at exceptional video quality. The H.264 coding standard enables broadcasters to more efficiently manage available bandwidth by adding more channels or by migrating to new High Definition content.
WWComs developed the VIP-264-HP for High Definition video markets such as Broadcasting Head-End, Telco IPTV, Video Surveillance, and Consumer Electronics. It utilizes advanced motion search algorithms and coding tools such as CABAC to achieve the higher resolutions at low bit rates. This implementation is fully compliant with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Moving Pictures Entertainment Group (MPEG) standards for the High Profile and Main Profile H.264 implementations.
The prototype is demonstrable today, and is supported by a PCI development platform and Linux software developer kit. A real-time demonstration will be shown during the NAB show at the Las Vegas Convention Center, booth number SU5205.
“The VIP-264-HP is the most efficient and flexible solution for high definition available today ” said Dr. Farhad Mighani, Vice President of Hardware Engineering at WWComs. WWComs has a critical match in a world-class hardware design team combined with H.264 algorithms that have been commercially tested and refined in DSPs over the last three years. “Perfecting the algorithms with this process allowed WWComs to develop the most efficient designs in critical modules before scaling to higher resolutions.”
