Programmable Radio-on-a-Chip(TM) Melds Two Blockbuster Cypress Technologies -- WirelessUSB(TM) and PSoC(TM)
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 23, 2005 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) today introduced the world's first 2.4-GHz Radio-on-a-Chip with a programmable mixed signal array. Cypress's new Programmable Radio-on-a-Chip(TM) (PRoC(TM)) includes two of the company's most noteworthy technologies - WirelessUSB(TM) and Programmable System-on-Chip(TM) (PSoC(TM)) - in one integrated device. It delivers the benefits of both WirelessUSB and PSoC into a variety of applications, including consumer electronics, home and industrial automation, Human Interface Device (HID), transportation, security and medical systems.
WirelessUSB has seen dramatic growth, particularly in HID applications, due to its ease of use and installation, low cost, and outstanding interference immunity. Systems with WirelessUSB also require a mixed-signal array or microcontroller for control functions and protocol implementations. In order to provide complete wireless solutions in many applications, Cypress offers the industry's broadest line of USB microcontrollers and an extensive portfolio of PSoC mixed signal arrays. The new PRoC device is the first in a broad portfolio of devices that combine WirelessUSB technology with Cypress controller solutions. PRoC offers access to a general-purpose mixed signal array with four programmable analog and four programmable digital blocks, 8K Bytes of Flash program memory storage, 512 Bytes of SRAM data storage, and a powerful Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) 2.4GHz radio system - all integrated in a compact, 48-pin QFN package. It is designed to implement highly-integrated, space-saving, low-cost, wireless systems operating in the worldwide 2.4-GHz ISM band.
"PRoC combines two great Cypress technologies to help make the vision of an 'unwired world' a reality for customers worldwide," said Christopher Norris, vice president of Cypress's Consumer and Computation Division. "It makes it fast, easy and cost-effective to implement WirelessUSB in a myriad of applications by using the powerful, flexible PSoC architecture. No other supplier can put forth this combination of technologies to serve the wireless connectivity market."
Price and Availability
Cypress is sampling the CYWUSB6953 today in 48-pin QFN packages. Full production quantities are expected to be available in Q3, 2005. Pricing is approximately $3.50 each depending on quantities. A high-resolution photo of the PRoC device and a data sheet are available at www.cypress.com/procphoto."
WirelessUSB, offered by both Cypress and its second-source partner, Atmel Corp. (NASDAQ: ATML), delivers the best combination of performance and cost versus competing wireless technologies. Featuring a highly integrated radio transceiver plus digital baseband on a single chip, WirelessUSB enables designers to significantly decrease development time, component count and system cost while improving operating range, power-consumption and latency. The DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum)-based technology is robust to interference and features a range of up to 50 meters and beyond.
PSoC devices are configurable mixed signal arrays that integrate a fast 8-bit microcontroller with many peripheral functions typically found in an embedded design. PSoC devices provide the advantages of an ASIC without the ASIC NRE or turn-around time. A single PSoC device can integrate as many as 100 peripheral functions with a microcontroller, saving customers design time, board space, and power consumption. Customers can save from 5 cents to as much as $10 in system costs. Easy to use development tools enable designers to select configurable library elements to provide analog functions such as amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, filters and comparators and digital functions such as timers, counters, PWMs, SPI and UARTs. The PSoC family's analog features include rail-to-rail inputs, programmable gain amplifiers and up to 14-bit ADCs with exceptionally low noise, input leakage and voltage offset. PSoC devices include up to 32KB of Flash memory, 2KB of SRAM, an 8x8 multiplier with 32-bit accumulator, power and sleep monitoring circuits, and hardware I2C communications.
Cypress solutions are at the heart of any system that is built to perform: consumer, computation, data communications, automotive, industrial, and solar power. Leveraging a strong commitment to customer service and performance-based process and manufacturing expertise, Cypress's product portfolio includes a broad selection of wired and wireless USB devices, CMOS image sensors, timing solutions, network search engines, specialty memories, high-bandwidth synchronous and micropower memory products, optical solutions, and reconfigurable mixed-signal arrays. Cypress stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol CY. More information about the company is available online at www.cypress.com.
