Renesas Technology Leads VoIP Semiconductor Market with Industry's First Nortel-Certified Reference Platform
The market-ready platform helps save time and costs for testing and validating consumer VoIP end-point devices
SAN JOSE, Calif., September 20, 2005 −− Renesas Technology Corp. today announced that a turn-key voice-over-IP (VoIP) reference platform co-developed with Arcturus Networks Inc was awarded a Certificate of Compatibility from Nortel.
This jointly developed solution is based on the Renesas SH7710 SuperH® series microprocessor with a middleware stack from Arcturus and is the first VoIP reference platform to be certified by Nortel. The SuperH VoIP reference platform was awarded this certificate after completing session initiation protocol (SIP) interoperability testing with Nortel's Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5200 (software release 3.0) and will now carry the Nortel Compatible Product designation.
"The SuperH-based VoIP platform enables OEMs and ODMs to quickly develop end-point devices for Nortel-equipped service-provider applications," said Alan Stoddard, general manager, Carrier Multimedia Networks, Nortel. "Making out SIP client interoperability specification available to a broad range of client and terminal vendors across the industry helps accelerate the delivery of multimedia communications to mainstream consumers and enterprises, putting SIP clients in every home and on every desktop."
"VoIP product developers can now use a reference design that includes software that is already certified to produce a wider variety of products to complement Nortel customers' service networks," said Brian Davis, director of business development, advanced solutions group of Renesas Technology America. "The platform's baseline interoperability certification lets them focus on application and feature differentiation to deliver added value."
Rich Larsen, chief operating officer of Arcturus Networks Inc., said, "Our certified VoIP reference platform includes all the components needed to build consumer VoIP end-point devices, including provisioning and management capabilities. As a technology provider to manufacturers we need to ensure that our customers have the tools to bring products to market quickly. By pre-certifying our reference platform with Nortel MCS 5200 release we are dramatically reducing the overall burden and risk for OEMs in this marketplace."
The VoIP reference platform, which incorporates highly tuned and optimized multimedia middleware, is a high-performance, cost-effective solution. Ideal for both consumer and SOHO products, it can support a wide range of configurations, form factors, performance/cost points, and target applications. Among the platform's key features are support for multiple telephone lines, simultaneous conference-call support, high-performance accelerated VPN, fast routing for full gateway-level functionality, quick start-up, and a flexible configuration capability.
