NEC Electronics Licenses ARM1156T2-S Processor
NEC Electronics aims to develop high-performance mobile technology without sacrificing battery life
CAMBRIDGE, UK – Sep. 29, 2005 –ARM [(LSE:ARM); (Nasdaq:ARMHY)] today announced that NEC Electronics Corporation has licensed ARM1156T2-S™ processor, following successful collaboration on previous members of the ARM11™ processor family in 2003. The ARM11 processor family will enable the development of high-performance, next-generation mobile phones without sacrificing battery performance.
“Consumers now demand an advanced wireless solution which has elaborate multimedia functions, without sacrificing portability and battery performance,” said Masakazu Yamashina, general manager, Mobile Systems Division of Third Systems Operations Unit, NEC Electronics. “Looking at the technology and the market, this partnership with ARM, which has a large share in this market, makes perfect sense to meet such demands. The ARM1156T2-S processor complements the other ARM11 family processors, providing the system LSI for mobile devices to meet the demands of next-generation mobile technology, and NEC Electronics already has a strong relationship with ARM which will be enhanced further by this agreement.”
“The decision to integrate the ARM1156T2-S processor into NEC Electronics’ next-generation mobile devices demonstrates the full potential of ARM technology, which already powers more than 90 percent* of 32/64-bit microprocessors in the mobile handset market,” said Takafumi Nishijima, president, ARM KK. “ARM will continue to be committed to enabling our Partners to capitalize on this opportunity, while offering a scalable framework of development tools so that companies can evolve their offerings.”
