Avanti Corp. (Fremont, Calif.) is claiming to offer the industry's first "completely free" IC physical library. For customers who purchase key components of Avanti's SinglePass layout tools, Avanti will not only provide a free library but also waive foundry-related royalty charges.
Libra-Visa libraries are available for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Chartered Semiconductor and other foundries. The "silicon-proven" libraries follow foundry-specific design rules and use Spice models for silicon accuracy. They are optimized for performance and density within the SinglePass tool environment.
Avanti entered the libraries business through its purchase of Compass Design Automation, and its latest promotion is an apparent response to Artisan Components' "free-library" business model based on royalties. The physical-library business has been extremely volatile in response to shifting business models. Visit www.avanticorp.com for further information.

Oki has licensed the ARM920T core from ARM Ltd. for use in high-performance wideband-CDMA, personal digital assistant and Internet devices. According to the companies, Oki will incorporate the ARM920T core-based system in its recently announced microPlat development platform line, introduced to support OEM system development by integrating designs and reducing time-to-market. The ARM920T core will provide a high-end microPLAT solution. Oki already uses the ARM7 and ARM9 Thumb families in its products.
OKI said it will produce the ARM920T core-based system using its advanced 0.18-micron CMOS process, with samples due in October. For further information, visit www.oki.com and www.arm.com.
