ECS EliteGroup demonstrates first dual-mode Mobile WiMAX/EDGE device using Comsys single-chip multimode baseband processor
January 7, 2009 -- CES, Las Vegas – ECS EliteGroup Computer Systems and Comsys Communication & Signal Processing Ltd. have announced that Comsys' award-winning ComMAX™ CM1125 Multimode Mobile WiMAX/EDGE baseband processor will enable ECS EliteGroup's new line of cutting-edge Mobile WiMAX devices.
ECS EliteGroup will be demonstrating a prototype of their S370 Personal Internet Communicator working on both Mobile WiMAX and GSM networks in their suite at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas on January 8-11, 2008, to coincide with CES (Consumer Electronics Show).
The S370 has been designed around the ComMAX CM1125 to provide users with the ultimate mobile internet experience. As well as supporting dual-mode mobile WiMAX and GSM/EDGE operation for Data and Voice services, it enables voice service continuity between WiMAX VoIP and GSM CS voice with seamless handover - even when travelling at high speed - using a standard IMS/VCC solution. In addition, it integrates Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.
The user is thus able to, for example, conduct a conversation using a BT earphone while accessing information on the internet, with full service continuity even when crossing between WiMAX and GSM/EDGE coverage areas.
Scheduled to be commercially available early in the second half of 2009, the S370 also features a 3.8" full touch screen 800x480 pixel TFT, built in GPS and motion detectors.
"This represents a very significant milestone for the WiMAX industry: the debut of the world's first dual-mode Mobile WiMAX/EDGE mobile device using a single-chip baseband processor," commented Ehud Reshef, Director of WiMAX Product Marketing at Comsys. "By introducing this new device, ECS EliteGroup is setting the benchmark for a new generation of terminals that will work on Mobile WiMAX networks with seamless roaming on legacy GSM/EDGE networks."
"The high level of integration, world leading specification, and dual-mode operation of the S370 have only been made possible because of the multimode performance of the CM1125 processor," added Rex Chang, Vice President of ECS EliteGroup. "Basing our design on the ComMAX reference platform and incorporating devices from their ecosystem partners has allowed us to establish a new class of performance and cost effectiveness for multimode WiMAX/EDGE terminals."
ECS's new line of mobile WiMAX Personal Internet Communicators heralds good news for all stakeholders in the Mobile WiMAX industry, particularly the Operators:
"The availability of handsets and other Mobile WiMAX terminals has been relatively limited until now," said Mr. Peter Chang, Senior Manager for Terminal & Application Platforms at Tatung InfoComm Co., Ltd. "The introduction of the S370 is particularly welcome as it expands the choices available to both operators and subscribers, and helps to validate the business case for launching Mobile WiMAX networks. It has shown prospective customers what they can expect from a state-of-the-art multimode handset, and has set the standard – in terms of price, power, performance and size – against which future terminals will be judged."
Ehud Reshef added: "We are very confident about the future of the S370 and other mobile devices enabled by the CM1125. This slick device highlights the significant benefits of designing ComMAX enabled mobile devices, and we expect to see many more devices based around the CM1125 and its platform during 2009."
