Tata Elxsi announces multicore DSP-based WiMAX base station and carrier class CPE for public safety and defence applications
February 12, 2009 -- Bangalore -- Tata Elxsi Ltd (TEL) today announced the availability of WiMAX solutions based on Texas Instruments’ multicore TMS320TCI6487 digital signal processor chip. The advanced solution supports single and multi-sector/multi-carrier requirements, and provides OEMs and ODMs the ability to bring advanced, carrier-class product designs quickly to market.
The system incorporates the Tata Elxsi 802.16e pre-tested and optimized Mobile WiMAX baseband software (both PHY and MAC) fully integrated on a production quality hardware platform and RF through partner companies. Tata Elxsi also brings in telecom product development, integration and customization experience in wireless markets, to enable a fully optimized, ready to deploy solution on the TI platform.
The software provides modularity and scalability for OEMs/ODMs to support macro, micro and femto configurations, and plug in proprietary differentiators. The Base Station solutions are tested for interoperability with 3rd party ASN Gateways, with optional modules for R6 interface and security protocols, and are currently being tested with 3rd party CPEs.
Further, the solution is integrated with Tata Elxsi’s Network Management System, which offers a ready framework for provisioning, configuration and advanced features to suit WiMAX network deployment.
“The solution addresses challenges faced by manufacturers in developing and deploying WiMAX products for different markets and specifications. Tata Elxsi is pleased to be working closely with TI to enable customers with an advanced solution to address their needs. The solution has been licensed to multiple customers for commercial deployment,” says Nitin Pai, General Manager for Marketing at Tata Elxsi.
Tata Elxsi also provides a complete Carrier Class WiMAX CPE reference design including a compact form-factor baseband and RF hardware. Such CPE are especially well suited for mission critical applications as they are highly reliable and flexible with proven capabilities. The use of TI’s flagship single core DSP, TMS320TCI6484, can further help in reducing the BoM of such CPEs.
TI’s robust portfolio of DSP products allows OEMs to offer a wide variety of products to meet service providers’ feature requirements and deployment roadmaps. These DSPs complement a suite of software solutions and high performance analog products that enable the development of multi-standard wireless and communications infrastructure systems.
“We are very pleased that Tata Elxsi has selected TI’s field proven multicore DSPs for their carrier-class solutions,” said Sandeep Kumar, general manager for TI’s growth infrastructure market group. “By developing end-to-end WiMAX designs, Tata Elxsi is making it easier for manufacturers and carriers to quickly and affordably deploy WiMAX for applications such as public safety and defense.”
