Industry’s Highest Performance Processor Core, the 64-Bit, 600-MHz
MIPS64â„¢ 20Kcâ„¢ Core, Recognized by Cahners In-Stat/MDR
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 25, 2002 -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS, MIPSB), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and network applications, announced today it is the proud recipient of the Microprocessor Report Analysts’ Choice Award for Best High-Performance Processor Core of 2001, the MIPS64™ 20Kc™ core. The 64-bit hard core is the embedded processor industry’s highest performance licensable core. Cahners In-Stat/MDR (MicroDesign Resources), publisher of the Microprocessor Report, presents its annual Analysts’ Choice Awards to honor the best new microprocessor chips and most promising new microprocessor technology.
The 600-MHz 20Kc core, which recently became available to customers for design starts (see Feb. 13 announcement), achieves performance of 1370 Dhrystone 2.1 MIPS (with inlining) in a 0.13-micron fabrication process. The superscalar core gives semiconductor suppliers and OEMs the highest core performance available for cost- and power-sensitive applications such as multimedia home gateways, automotive telematics, networking, office automation and game consoles.
“The MIPS64 20Kc core provides the most flexible capability to deliver performance due to its clock frequency and its implementation of the MIPS 64-bit ISA,†said Cary Snyder, a senior analyst at In-Stat/MDR and senior editor of Microprocessor Report.
“This award demonstrates our growing momentum and validates the progress we have made over the past three years since the company began focusing on microprocessor IP for the embedded market. This is a very exciting time in the embedded processor industry, with very high-performance cores being designed into cost-effective SOCs to deliver outstanding next-generation products. MIPS Technologies is proud to be recognized as a driver in that effort and have its technology honored for it,†said Kevin Meyer, vice president of marketing at MIPS Technologies. “For designers of sophisticated SOCs, the 20Kc hard core doesn’t merely deliver high performance; it also delivers on the other characteristics that are so vital to embedded applications, such as low system power, low overall system cost and fast time to market.â€
MIPS Technologies held an online technical seminar on Feb. 12 in which Keith Diefendorff and Liam Madden, vice president of high-performance processors, showed how to design embedded SOCs using the 20Kc core. The presentation will be archived for six months at www.mips.com and www.netseminar.com.
Cahners In-Stat/MDR will formally present the Analysts’ Choice Awards for 2001 at the Embedded Processor Forum being held April 29 May 2 in San Jose, Calif.
