Up to 10- & 12-bit YUV 422/444 support for extreme visual quality

8K30fps by single core at 500Mhz, and 8K60fps & 120fps support by multi-core

Chips&Media, the leading HW IP provider located in Seoul, South Korea, has reached commercialization stage of Advanced Professional Video, APV, CODEC and is announcing its C-model is available to Android industry for encoder quality evaluation and benchmarking.

Advanced Professional Video, APV, CODEC is a next generation of video compression & decompression tool and key technology for prosumers who do not want to compromise on quality while enjoying the convenience of video capture and edit experience using edge devices such as smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.

To ensure the over-the-horizon video experience with extreme visual quality, APV CODEC works with up to 10- and 12-bit YUV in 422&444 format. Chips&Media delivers HW IP of APV CODEC with 8K30fps performance by single core at 500Mhz. Furthermore, thanks to flexible HW architecture from 20-year IP design experience, the performance can reach 8K60fps, even 8K120fps, by multi-core at competitive area cost and low power consumption to enable professional video experience in variety of use-cases such as slow-motion capture and playback.

Chips&Media aims to release final RTL of APV encoder & decoder together in 3Q 2025 to complete APV HW IP commercialization by key features & benefits as listed below.

   • Perceptually lossless video quality (close to raw video quality)

   • Bitrate reduction over conventional video CODEC

   • Support for bitrates from a few hundred Mbps to a few Gbps

   • Low complexity CODEC

   • Intra frame only coding

   • Increased chroma fidelity

   • Frame tiling

   • High throughput processing

   • Multiple decoding and re-encoding without losing visual quality

   • Flexible & extensible metadata

Chips&Media has announced the participation in the APV ecosystem as well as a plan of APV CODEC HW IP delivery as the world’s first early this year. The collaboration and roadmap together with other ecosystem leaders like Samsung, Qualcomm, Google etc, have been published through Samsung Developer Conference in 2024 and 2023 already.
