The Nobel Prize in Physics this year has been awarded to three distinguished scientists—John Clarke of the University of California, Berkeley; Michel H. Devoret of Yale University (New Haven, Connecticut), and the University of California, Santa Barbara; and John M. Martinis of the University of California, Santa Barbara—for their groundbreaking studies in quantum mechanics.
They have shown how quantum properties can show up on a large scale through their experiments. The winners have shown both quantum tunneling and quantized energy levels in systems that are small enough to be grasped in one hand.
