The rhetoric around European technological sovereignty and strategic autonomy has intensified, but how can these ambitions be turned into concrete action? At the recent European Processor Initiative (EPI) Forum in Paris, industry pundits examined the strategic challenge of ensuring Europe not only develops but also maintains coherent control over its high-performance computing (HPC), edge, and AI ecosystems.

“HPC, edge computing, and AI are not just tools for innovation; they are also the unified backbone for future competitiveness, security, and resilience,” said Eric Monchalin, vice president and head of machine intelligence at Eviden and chairman of the EPI board. Monchalin moderated the panel discussion, where the consensus was that Europe’s challenge lies less in delivering innovation than in ensuring that “our digital infrastructure, data, and AI systems reflect European values, serve our citizens, and remain under our control,” as he put it.
