Could an EU Chips Act 2.0 Bridge the Lab-to-Fab Gap?

When the European Chips Act came into force in September 2023, it was hailed as Europe’s most ambitious industrial policy in decades. Its promise was bold: Double Europe’s share of global semiconductor production to 20% by 2030 and restore technological sovereignty in a field long dominated by the U.S. and Asia.

EE Times Europe reached out to the European Commission (EC) to find out what may come next. According to a spokesperson, the Chips Act has already catalyzed more than €80 billion in manufacturing investments and committed 85% of the €3.3 billion budget under the Chips for Europe initiative. Those results, the EC spokesperson said, “have laid a strong foundation for consolidating Europe’s position in the global semiconductor market after two decades of decline.”
