Fourth-quarter Losses Narrow Sharply for Foundry, System LSI Units
By Kim Eun-jin, Business Korea
Samsung Electronics’ non-memory semiconductor operations, including its foundry and System LSI divisions, sharply reduced losses in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the previous quarter. According to Daol Investment & Securities, the company’s non-memory business posted an operating loss of 165 billion won (approximately $113.56 million) in the fourth quarter, down significantly from a 448 billion won loss in the previous quarter. In the first half of last year alone, the combined operating loss of the two divisions totaled as much as 4.96 trillion won.
In July last year, the System LSI unit secured a contract to supply image sensors to Apple, an area previously dominated by Sony. The win was attributed to Samsung’s focus on developing high-resolution products and its response to U.S. policies aimed at revitalizing domestic manufacturing.
