Xilinx Enables China's First HDTV I/O Card from Dayang
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- April 22, 2009 -- Xilinx (Nasdaq: XLNX) today announced that the new Red Bridge III HD Video I/O Card from Dayang Technology Development Inc., a leading supplier of broadcast quality video products, is enabled by the DSP-optimized Xilinx(R) Virtex(R)-5 SXT family of programmable devices. The highly integrated solution powers China's first high definition (HD) video processing and I/O card and provides PCI Express(R) connectivity, high-speed GTP transceivers and integrated DSP slices to create a robust video card for HD and standard definition (SD) video. Dayang is showcasing the Red Bridge III card at the National Association for Broadcasters (NAB) conference, April 20-23, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, South Upper Hall, Booth #9606.
The RedBridge III Video Card is aimed at applications such as Non-Linear Editing (NLEs), broadcast graphics and ingest servers, and features a PCI Express bus supporting SDI and HD-SDI with up to 2 inputs and 4 outputs. The card offers international video standards support and includes a 16-bit on board mixer with 0 frame delay.
The Red Bridge video card incorporates a variety of critical features into a single Xilinx FPGA. Key to Dayang's product development success was the ability to support the PCI Express standard with a single-slot PCIe x8 bus, which they were able to achieve through integrating a hardened IP block from Xilinx. In addition, the designers leveraged the high-speed transceivers available with the Virtex(R)-5 SXT device, as well as a 32-bit MicroBlaze(TM) soft processor core, which both provide the performance necessary for bridging HD-SDI to PCI Express connectivity, as well as for the DDRII memory controller function.
"We needed a cost-effective but powerful single chip solution to enable the capabilities required by this very demanding market. The Virtex-5 FPGA-based solution provided an ideal platform for us to integrate critical connectivity and processing capabilities, including DSP functions. The ease of development helped expedite our development process such that we are now the first Chinese supplier of an HD video card to our market," said Mr. Deng Wei, vice president of Dayang.
The RocketIO(TM) Gigabit transceivers in the Virtex-5 SXT FPGA operate at the industry's lowest power consumption levels (less than 100 mW at 3.75 Gbps). For the Red Bridge III card, they were used to support multiple protocols (standard and proprietary). The transceivers also work seamlessly with integrated PCI Express endpoint blocks. Additionally, the Virtex-5 SXT FPGA's integrated DSP capabilities were used to enable the HD image processing at the low power requirements necessary for the Red Bridge III card.
"The Virtex-5 SXT devices are optimized for this type of product through its ability to integrate high performance digital signal processing capabilities for memory intensive video applications and still operate at low power. The support of serial connectivity with our high speed transceivers for protocols such as SDI, HD-SDI, and PCI Express enhances the capabilities this solution offers, and this was a key aspect of the Red Bridge III video card development," said Rob Green, senior manager, Broadcast Marketing at Xilinx.
