Chips&Media releases CFrame10, its new hardware design for frame buffer compression
March 7, 2014 -- Chips&Media, Inc., a well-known provider of video IP, announced today that they have signed licensing agreements with some of major SoC manufacturers in the US and other regions for their lossless frame buffer compression solution. They said development of this standalone IP had already been completed in the fourth quarter of 2013 and recently it has started to ship.
In recent years there has been a growing demand of multimedia SoC delivering super high quality video record and playback. As evidence now UHD (3840x2160) TVs and STBs are being widespread in the market. However, this rising trend increases system bandwidth rapidly, because much more data need to be processed and transferred in the system - for example UHD streams have four times more data than full HD steam. It is commonplace that chipmakers, who are seeking to produce chips armed with high speed as well as energy efficiency, feel uncomfortable with the tremendous amount of bandwidth traffic spent for video processing.
CFrame10 is a very efficient compression technology that is able to make video data smaller as much as 50-60% on average without any sacrifice thanks to its smart lossless coding scheme. It is expected to be adopted in a variety of application chips for camera, LCD, and so forth and also to help many multimedia SoC vendors who much care about power consumption. The CFrame10 supports YUV420 and YUV422 color format with 8bit and 10bit samples and consists of Compressor, De-compressor hardware block, and Map converter as an optional block for raster order output.
CFrame10 was once embedded in their HEVC/H.265 Decoder IP, WAVE410 in the second quarter of 2013. Chips&Media also have a plan to deploy it in their upcoming WAVE4 series products – the HEVC/H.265 MAIN10 4K Decoder IP and HEVC/H.265 MAIN10 4K Codec IP.
