Comsys declares WLAN & EDGE complementary
US Market Will Benefit from Confluence of Wi-Fi and EDGE Technologies
CTIA Wireless Show, New Orleans, LA – 12 March 2003: Comsys Communications & Signal Processing Ltd., a leader in licensable base-band solutions for cellular standards, announced today that WLAN and EDGE technologies are complementary and together are likely to provide a full solution addressing the needs of corporate data users.
In combination, WLAN and EDGE will provide a united indoors and outdoors environment for data communication that enables optimal utilization of wireless devices. As a leading purveyor of licensable IP (Intellectual Property) and combined software and hardware modules for the EDGE market, Comsys has recognized this synergy and is integrating tools and software algorithms to pursue opportunities in this emerging market.
Will Strauss, President of Forward Concepts, a leading market research firm tracking markets based on digital signal processing (DSP) technology, commented on the WLAN / EDGE marketplace, "I believe that WLAN hot spots will take the pressure off of going full UMTS 3G, at least in the U.S. I suspect that, at least in the U.S., EDGE coupled with WLAN hot spots will satisfy the capabilities that most people were expecting from full UMTS, and perhaps offer even more capabilities."
Comsys CEO Elkana Ben-Sinai commented, "With three major US wireless carriers committed to EDGE and with the phenomenal increase in Wi-Fi coverage, it is natural that the market work towards creating a union between these two technologies. EDGE can offer broadband rates that are needed by mobile enterprise users within the nation-wide coverage afforded by cellular networks. Comsys' strategy of focusing on EDGE integrated solutions with other technologies is proven and we are well positioned at the critical juncture to enable a successful EDGE / WLAN interface."
