ARM Discloses Technical Details of ARM926EJ-S Core
ARM Extends ARM9E Family with Synthesizabe Core Featuring ARM Jazelle Technology
CAMBRIDGE, UK - June 13, 2001 - ARM [(LSE: ARM); (Nasdaq: ARMHY)], the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC processor solutions, today announced a new addition to the ARM9E[tm] microprocessor family, the ARM926EJ-S[tm] core, at the Embedded Processor Forum, in San Jose, Calif. ARM has integrated its Jazelle[tm] Java[tm] technology into the ARM926EJ-S core, which will give platform developers high-performance Java capability alongside established OS, middleware and application code support on a single processor core. This will be the first synthesizable ARM® CPU core with an MMU to support leading operating systems such as the Symbian Platform, Linux, and Windows CE.
ARM Partners will be able to use the ARM926EJ-S core in a wide range of devices that utilize both Java applications and operating systems, such as web-enabled PDAs and smart phones, set-top boxes and in-car information devices. The ARM926EJ-S core combines the industry leading performance and very low power of the ARM Jazelle technology, with support for virtual memory addressing, which is required by many of the leading operating systems. In addition, it's a synthesizable core, which means it is portable to any silicon manufacturing process with an associated cell library, ensuring that it is compatible with the broadest range of present and future silicon processes.
The ARM926EJ-S core also incorporates independently configurable instruction and data caches and instruction and data Tightly Coupled Memories (TCMs), allowing cache and TCM memory sizes to be altered to suit specific applications, without the need to alter the CPU core.
"With the ARM926EJ-S core, ARM is not only providing a synthesizable CPU core which supports a range of operating systems from Windows CE to the Symbian Platform, but we are also enabling high-performance Java capability for embedded applications with our integrated Jazelle technology. The use of the flexible memory system means that our customers can quickly configure their core to suit specific system-on-chip (SoC) or ASSP requirements" said Paul Garden, Product Marketing manager, ARM. "The ARM926EJ-S core opens up a new range of possibilities, which a typical embedded processor design may not accommodate. By combining a synthesizable core with our Jazelle technology, we are giving our customers increased choice and functionality, while at the same time enabling low-cost designs and reduced time-to-market."
Two ARM Partners have recently announced that they have licensed the new ARM core. Sanyo is the first ARM Partner in Japan to license the ARM Jazelle technology-enabled microprocessor. (Sanyo Licenses Java-Enabled ARM Microprocessor Core for Portable Appliances, May 30, 2001). LSI Logic has announced that they have licensed the ARM926EJ-S core as its newest offering in their broad CoreWare[tm] library. (LSI Logic Licenses Synthesizable ARM926EJ-S Core with a Memory Management Unit and Java Support, June 5, 2001).
The ARM926EJ-S core will be licensed as an IP core for implementation within an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) or application-specific standard product (ASSP) design. Pricing for ARM926EJ-S core-based designs is established by ARM semiconductor licensees and is based on customer-specific system-level design requirements.
ARM is the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor solutions. The company licenses its high-performance, low-cost, power-efficient RISC processors, peripherals, and system-on-chip designs to leading international electronics companies. ARM also provides comprehensive support required in developing a complete system. ARM's microprocessor cores are rapidly becoming the volume RISC standard in such markets as portable communications, hand-held computing, multimedia digital consumer and embedded solutions.
