Accusys Selects MIPS-Based ASIC from Socle Technology for RAID Applications
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., and TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 26, 2004 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS) with Socle Technology Corp. and Accusys, Inc, today announced that Accusys, a provider of a full line of RAID controllers, has selected the MIPS32® 4Kp™ processor core for use in an SoC targeted at advanced RAID controller applications. Socle Technology, a MIPS Technologies licensee, is providing Accusys with a MIPS-Based™ turnkey SoC solution.
Since taking a license for the 32-bit MIPS32 4K™ family of synthesizable cores in April of 2003, Socle has offered its SoC design platform capabilities to IC design houses and system companies seeking highly-optimized SoC solutions. In response to Accusys' requests for assistance with its RAID controller design, Socle developed a hard core from the MIPS-provided synthesizable core design, with optimized power and size, and delivered it to Accusys using comprehensive services from its service platform. Socle's collaboration with MIPS Technologies simplifies the IP evaluation process and its customized service helped Accusys significantly shorten RAID controller development time, while reducing overall design costs.
The MIPS32 4Kp core provides an attractive option for applications such as RAID. At over 200MHz in performance but under 0.8 sq mm in a 0.18 micron process, it offers a tremendous price/performance point for SoC controller applications. The 4Kp core provides a full cache subsystem to execute a complete software control stack at high speed.
"Market leaders, such as Accusys, are turning to comprehensive IC design services companies such as Socle to obtain competitive SoC implementations while managing their system specs and software development," commented Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies. "MIPS Technologies' collaboration with Socle addresses the needs of mutual customers through a complete turnkey SoC implementation package. This model not only strengthens a customer's competitive edge through superior processor-based software technology, but accelerates the time-to-market and promotes business opportunities."
"Socle's successful collaboration with Accusys is another proof point of our superior technology and comprehensive SoC design capabilities," says David Lyou, president of Socle Technology. "The high-performance cores we have licensed from MIPS Technologies, when combined with our design expertise, enable the continued delivery of innovative, cost-effective, and timely solutions for our customers."
"The MIPS-Based RAID SoC controller designed for us by Socle will be used in high-volume, lower-end, RAID applications. Based on our previous experience, Socle's design services are unsurpassed-from its comprehensive technology platform to its customer-centric service," says Susyan Huang, president of Accusys. "Socle's successful integration of the MIPS architecture into this controller chip positions Accusys for continued success in the RAID market."
