TSMC Achieves 90% Yield in 2nm Memory Chip Production

TSMC’s development of its 2-nanometer process seems to be moving ahead smoothly. According to recent reports and rumors, the company has reached a yield of over 90% in the production of 2nm memory chips. This is a significant achievement, especially when compared to TSMC’s direct competitor, Samsung, which has struggled to surpass 20% yield in its own 2nm chips.

What Does a 90% Yield Mean?

A 90% yield means that 90% of the chips produced from each 2nm wafer are fully functional. This is an impressive result, especially considering that chips as complex as CPUs or GPUs often have different production challenges. The complexity of memory chips is different, and this yield is a major achievement for TSMC.

Reports suggest that TSMC is now receiving four times as many chip designs for 2nm production as it did when working with 5nm technology. This higher demand might result in higher prices. Additionally, TSMC’s Arizona facilities are nearing full capacity, handling orders from major companies like NVIDIA and Apple. However, these plants are restricted to producing 4nm and 5nm chips due to Taiwanese government regulations.
