While we continue to see big investments in AI data center infrastructure and GPUs, the edge is where we are likely to see some of the real benefits and real value generation of this current AI boom.

Edge AI is not new as we have been writing about this for years. I recall headlines in EE Times like “Edge Intelligence Grabs the Spotlight at Embedded World” in 2019, and then in 2020, “Let’s Talk Edge Intelligence” and “Connected Edge Embedded Intelligence Requires a Smarter Edge.” What is different now is that the hardware is more powerful and the development tools are getting better, hence deploying models at the edge is becoming easier.

Additionally, we are seeing deployment of devices. For example, in a briefing last month, Ambiq CEO Fumihide Esaka said the company was seeing growth in demand for energy-efficient AI solutions at the edge. “We are very excited at the steady growth in adoption of edge AI,” Esaka told EE Times. “We are gaining new customers quarter-on-quarter, and in 2026 we expect healthy revenue growth.”
