Tech giant to focus on lucrative 12-inch foundry
Samsung is planning to close one of its 8-inch foundry fabs within the year to focus on the more lucrative 12-inch foundry fabs that are used to manufacture advanced chips, TheElec has learned.
TSMC is also reducing the number of 8-inch fabs as well so this could be seen as a global trend in the chip industry.
Samsung will close its 8-inch fab called S7 at its Giheung facility in the second half of the year, sources said. The facility operates three 8-inch fabs, S6, S7 and S8. S6 and S8 will continue operations.
