Gov’t joins hands with Samsung to support AI chip development

South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources and Samsung Electronics Co. have joined forces to support the development of domestically produced artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.

The ministry held the first-half general meeting for the AI semiconductor division of the 2026 Manufacturing AI Transformation (M.AX) Alliance and officially launched a task force to support semiconductor manufacturing.

The task force includes Samsung Electronics, the country’s leading foundry operator, and semiconductor intellectual property (IP) firms Arm Holdings Plc, OpenEdge Technology Inc., Qualitas Semiconductor Co. and Chips&Media Inc.
