The OpenAI Samsung collaboration is moving beyond memory supply and enterprise AI services into work on next-generation processors, according to OpenAI Korea general manager Harrison Kim. Speaking at a press conference in Seoul, Kim said joint production and research on next-generation chips was one of the areas where the two companies had made the most progress. Neither company disclosed which chips are involved or whether Samsung Foundry has secured a production contract.

The disclosure nevertheless raises the prospect that Samsung could become a second manufacturing source for future OpenAI accelerators alongside Taiwan’s TSMC. OpenAI’s first custom inference processor, Jalapeño, was designed by OpenAI and co-developed with Broadcom, with TSMC providing manufacturing. OpenAI has described Jalapeño as the beginning of a multigenerational platform and says its second-generation design is already deep in development.
