The first bricks
After years of primarily participating in the semiconductor supply chain in the design, packaging, and testing stages, Vietnam is facing a crucial shift: entering the chip manufacturing stage.
In early 2026, Viettel Group will begin construction of Vietnam's first high-tech semiconductor chip manufacturing plant in the Hoa Lac High-Tech Park, covering an area of 27 hectares. The plant is expected to help Vietnam take a significant step further into this value chain. According to the announced plan, the plant will utilize 32nm technology, complete construction and technology transfer by the end of 2027, and begin trial production in 2028.
According to Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang, Chairman and CEO of Viettel, chip manufacturing is one of the most sophisticated and demanding technological processes. Building and operating the factory presents many challenges, but without taking action, Vietnam will not be able to master the manufacturing process and ultimately control the entire semiconductor value chain.
