Samsung is reportedly considering an acquisition in the silicon photonics space as it looks to close the gap with TSMC in advanced chip packaging. The technology could help Samsung meet growing demand for faster, more power-efficient connections in AI chips and data centers.
According to a new report from Korea’s MTN, Samsung Foundry plans to enter the photonic IC market next year using 12-inch (300mm) wafer processes. The company is reportedly targeting optical-module makers such as Coherent and Lumentum as potential customers, along with fabless companies that design photonic ICs.
Samsung initially plans to sell wafers. It eventually wants to expand into combining electrical ICs with photonic ICs and optical packaging.
