Company notifies customers of shutdown plans, leaving fabless chipmakers scrambling for alternative production capacity

Samsung Electronics has decided to completely exit the 8-inch wafer foundry business and has notified customers of its plans, THE ELEC has learned.

Samsung Electronics had previously said only that it would gradually scale down its 8-inch production lines. This is the first time the company has specified a deadline for ending operations. South Korean fabless semiconductor companies that rely on Samsung for chip manufacturing are now scrambling to secure alternative production capacity.
