Short Facts About D&R

Design & Reuse (D&R) was founded in October, 1997 as a web portal for added-value information in the field of electronic virtual component, i.e. IP (intellectual property) and SoC (system-on-chip).

D&R has taken profit of an incubation mode with Institute National Polytechnique de Grenoble (France) and European support through Medea projects.

D&R went through several steps during its first 6 years life (1997-2003).

1997: Started as SARL, a fully private-hold company founded by the inventors.
1998: Changed the corporation into SA (Societé anonyme) with a capital of 1M FF following the entry of CMP media INC for 19% share and the creation of a shareholder pact.
2001: D&R is awarded with the "Trophee de la Nouvelle Economie" delivered by Cegetel and l'Express.
2001: D&R puts on the market IP Manager SeriesTM.
2002: D&R puts on the market eDesign ManagerTM

D&R as a Web Portal

D&R became the worldwide leader as a web and a B2B portal in the IP/SoC field. By IP should be understood Silicon IP as well as software IPs such as embedded software. This position has been reinforced over the years; With its 150.000 page views per month, 15.000 daily updated IP/SOC products descriptions and the on going client/provider matching activity, D&R web stays worldwide unique. It has become obvious that each product launching in this field will trigger an announcement and a marketing campaign hosted on D&R web sites. 150 companies have signed up a partnership agreement with D&R for providing their latest information to the market through D&R channel and taking the best benefit from its lead service and B2B matching opportunities.

D&R has a mission to trigger the IP business

D&R provides unique services to the IP providers for creating the best communication channels to their customers. For this purpose D&R holds private catalogs for the major players; Data import from the provider data base is automated and guarantees high quality data; These private catalogs are also used as an extension to a private micro site linked to D&R portal .They can also be used for provider’s customers, as a live server in the customer intranet or through CDRoM copies.

For IP consumers and based on a patent deposit, D&R has put in place in 2001 a Data intranet import gateway feature for feeding automatically intranet IP/SoC resource catalogs for large companies with supplier confidential data from a gateway external to the firewall.

In addition to delivering well recognized quarterly market analysis reports entitled IP/SOC market Watch, D&R is also the Number One News provider in the IP/SOC field since 2002 by editing twice a week an IP/SOC News Alert to 25.000 subscribers. No large companies or IP provider would miss this News Letter to get the latest news.

D&R Products

Based on its early experience, D&R licenses technology and services to make IP sharing and reuse happen worldwide and in each electronic design enterprise through 3 major products.

To IP providers, D&R offers the best vehicle (IP ProviderSstation) for publishing their offers through electronic catalogs, packaging their IPs and optimizing their delivery to customers while providing outstanding customer support. Automated catalog update, easy and efficient client data base management, and reliable IP delivery process will allow them to save resources while creating the best communication channel to their customers for mutual satisfaction; This will let them focus more resources on their excellence domain which is the IP design.

For large intranet corporations, D&R offers an innovative technology (IP consumer Intranet station) for organizing intranet catalogs for pre qualified external supplier and installing IP delivery stations for external suppliers under corporate contract; This will give a better insight to Asic project designers for selecting and using external suppliers and will drastically save time to market for their best Asic designs.

Finally D&R delivers to large corporations the Premier internal reuse station (IP reuse Intranet Station) so efficient and so easy to use that designers can exchange their reusable blocks with close to no overhead.

Within large corporations, information and IP source sharing of internal Intellectual property will become a reality by using D&R Technology; D&R believes that the Electronic design enterprise platforms have to be envisioned and implemented with the help and through the vision of experienced electronic design players in order to fully capture the needs of this community.

Early products and market penetration achievements

Customer status shows a successful technical proof for all software launched by D&R. The first customers of D&R in addition to the 150 D&R portal partners are:
  • ITRI (Taiwan) for holding the Taiwanese IP gateway for 3 years.
  • Alcatel (France) for a corporate intranet IP reuse environment.
  • 32 IP providers including major players (such as Arm, Synopsys, Mentor, xilinx, LSI Logic etc..) for creating private catalogs and delivering their IP data in intranet corporation.

Shareholding Status

Shares are in addition to the CMP (19 %) kept in the hands of private shareholders representing the founders (70 %) and early employees for the remaining percentage.

Financial Status

The company is profitable since its creation partially. An income growth of 50% was realized in 2000 and a net benefit of $150k was reported. In 2001 a net benefit of $225k was reported. In 2002 the reported net benefit of $150K. In 2003 and 2004 the company stayed slightly profitable whereas the investment in productizing the products has been reinforced.

In 2005 D&R has decided following the recommendations of its major customers to raise VC and re triggers an aggressive business plan to become the IP company of the web collaborative design world.

D&R Founders

The founders are:
  • Gabriele Saucier, PhD who is a high level scientist (IEEE Fellow for her contributions in EDA with more than 300 high level publications). Gabriele Saucier was first a university professor where she conducted around 100 PHDs an published over 350 technical papers in international journals.
Leaving her academic career she created a first start-up on synthesis on FPGA IST (Innovative Synthesis Technologies). The software and the people have been acquired by US companies and presently used by all major FPGA vendors since she sold the company in 1996.
  • Philippe Coeurdevey got a MS degree in electronic design form INPG and is considered worldwide as a "wonder" web master for having launched and created the very successful D&R web portal. The toolkit used for creating this portal gave birth in a second step to the set.
