Innopower Regulator (REG) is a linear regulator with high current driving capability, low dropout voltage, low quiescent current, and high accuracy positive voltage that requires only one external frequency compensation capacitor. An internal bandgap reference, including a trimming design, can achieve an accurate output voltage in answer to the process variations. The external capacitors are the recommended components for stabilizing the linear regulator output.
Linear regulator consists of the following components:
A high-gain OP-AMP
A higher precision and lower power consumption bandgap voltage reference
An output driver
Normally, a low dropout linear regulator requires a larger external compensating capacitor at the output. This external capacitor is used to curtail the offshoot and determine the load transient response. For the Innopower linear regulator, an external capacitor is required.
Some REG are specifically designed for the dual-voltage output. These two regulators may suffer from the greater transient suppression; therefore, the performance of the external capacitors is very important. Two external capacitors of more than 0.1 µF with lower Effective Serial Resistance (ESR > 0.5 ?) are required to stabilize these regulators.
When the input linear regulator supply voltage is higher than the expected output voltage value, the linear regulators operate normally. However, when the linear regulator power supply voltage is lower than the designed target, the linear regulator acts only as a switch, and the output voltage is dependent on the output loading.
