Photron Turns to Xilinx Programmable Solutions for Latest High Speed Camera
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 30, 20008 -- Xilinx Inc., (Nasdaq: XLNX) today announced that its programmable solutions, including software, high-performance silicon and IP, have enabled the latest high-speed camera from Photron, a leading provider of imaging technology with headquarters in Japan and North America. Photron is among a growing number of image technology providers to leverage Xilinx high-performance programmable solutions to introduce innovative, industry-first technology.
Photron combined the high-performance capabilities of Xilinx(R) Virtex(R)-II Pro field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), ISE(R) design software and Ethernet MAC intellectual property (IP) core to achieve the ambitious design goals of its latest innovation. The FASTCAM MH4-10K high-speed camera makes it possible to shoot 2,000 frames per second with 512 by 512 pixel by connecting four channels of subminiature camera heads. It received high praise in the automotive collision test area, based on its superior performance and high reliability.
"High-speed cameras manage a great deal of data, and fast data transfer is critical to improving our customer's operating efficiency," said Hirokazu Mizuhara, product manager at Photron. "Gigabit Ethernet is an important factor which focuses on performance improvement. We adopted Xilinx devices and Gigabit Ethernet IP core after comprehensively evaluating its high-speed performance, low power consumption, and stability. Xilinx also provided excellent customer support, which was also a decisive factor in our vendor selection. Thanks to case studies, transfer speed and power consumption estimates as well as reference designs provided by Xilinx, we were able to reduce risks to a minimum and get our product to market in record time."
"Image processing application developers must take advantage of new and emerging technologies in order to meet the diverse needs of the markets it serves, many of which often converge, collide or remain in flux. Solutions must be fast, flexible and dynamic enough to adapt to ever-changing requirements," said Osamu Sawada, senior manager, Product Solution Marketing, at Xilinx KK. "Xilinx solutions feature an array of IP building blocks, development boards, and pre-verified reference designs that assist developers in getting their designs into production and products to market as quickly as possible."
